After.Life (2009)

After letting the girls watch Scream (from MTV), I decided to check out what was onDemand as they were headed to the bath. My selection for the evening was the creepy funeral home based After.Life from 2009.

Plot/ A young woman caught between life and death... and a funeral director who appears to have the gift of transitioning the dead, but might just be intent on burying her alive.

This was an interesting flick, one that created a very simple yet intriguing storyline. The cinematography and direction are solid, as are the performances, but it is the colors, shading and soundtrack that create a heavy and eerie atmosphere that are truly the best part of the film (not to mention Christina Ricci, who is as hot as ever). More of a mystery or thriller than horror movie (although, some of the funeral preps are decently visual and creepy), this picture just works. Sure, it is no blockbuster, but for an indie film it is one of the best I have seen in some time. Check it out if you get a chance (especially since it is on Starz onDemand).
